Father and Daughter

Raising a child alone is hard, everyone knows that, and each child is unique so that makes it even harder, what works for someone else’s child may not work for yours. Also as a single parent there are additional issues, whether you are raising a boy or a girl, some things are just naturally harder. I only know about the challenges of raising a daughter alone, but I’m sure as a woman, it would be difficult to raise a son alone, obviously for different reasons. I have tried very hard to maintain a relationship with Hailey’s father because I believe … Continue reading

Candy Patrol, The Return

The night is done, the pumpkins are out, and the children are wrestling with sugar highs in their beds. The costume is all tucked snug into the dress up container, and everything is quiet. Ah. I’m sure that the candies are downstairs having their own little party, though. There are certainly a lot of them. We don’t tend to go for the binge mode here. Yes, of course we ate a lot of sweets today. It is Halloween, after all. However, we only overdid it just a little. The vegetables in dinner counteracted the sweets to make things feel slightly, … Continue reading

Back To School Blessings

It is often a tradition in many mormon homes to give back to school blessings at the beginning of each school year. Or, at least it was in mine. I don’t remember anything that was said in those blessings, but I remember feeling peace each time my Father would lay his hands on my head and reassure me that the year would go smoothly. I remember feeling safe, and warm, and knowing that not only did my earthly Father love me, but my Heavenly Father did too. Giving your children back to school blessings is a great way to calm … Continue reading

A Good Cry Is What You Need

I love being a mother. There is nothing I’d rather do than parent my daughter. I feel that she is truly a gift. I wouldn’t have chosen to be a single parent but that’s the way it happened. I try to be positive, I want my daughter to always look on the bright side. Yes, sometimes life is hard, but that doesn’t mean you have to let it defeat you. I am always the first to say, keep your chin up, do it for your kids. Sometimes, I forget to take my own advice. Sometimes I feel sorry for myself. … Continue reading

Have Fun with Dad

Whether it’s on Father’s Day, next week Tuesday or the following Friday, carving out time to have fun with Dad can make a huge difference in the life of a child. Solidifying the relationship between Dad and daughter or son is vital, especially in this day and age when children are being robbed of their innocence at an extremely young age. This summer take some time to bond with Dad in the great outdoors by partaking in the following fun activities: Build a Terrarium: Get dirty with Dad by collecting materials to feature in a terrarium. Look for small rocks, … Continue reading

Some Days It’s Just Hard

I love being a mom. It truly is one of the greatest joys in my life. Watching my daughter grow into the person she will become and knowing I had something to do with that, makes my heart happy. That’s not to say it is the easiest thing I’ve ever done. I thought parenting was difficult when I was married but it’s much harder as a single mom. For me, the toughest thing is not having that sounding board to bounce ideas off and get advice from. We all want to do what’s best for our child but sometimes it’s … Continue reading

Reality is Setting In….

I always knew that I was only homeschooling until high school. That is not my rule but my husband’s rule. When he first presented the condition I was thrilled. My child was five year old and high school seemed a lifetime away. Well, it is almost ten years later the time has come to send her off to school. I would be lying if I said the thought did not turn my stomach. I literally (and I use the term correctly) had a nightmare the night I realized my husband was taking me up on the deal made a decade … Continue reading

You Can Have It All

Why isn’t there a super hero single mother? Some days I feel like I must be super human to get it all done. Unfortunately I’m not super human and at the end of most days I’m just tired. Women in general seem to shoulder the lions share of child rearing and housekeeping, and have for a very long time. Things are getting better, more fathers are actively involved in raising their kids and more men are helping around the house. The majority still falls to the women, and when you are a single mother, there is no majority, it’s all … Continue reading

Mouth-to-Mouth Feeding

By now most of you have seen celebrity mama Alicia Silverstone puking her lunch into her 10-month-old son’s mouth. If you’ve been spared from the trauma thus far, but want to join the masses, you can watch the video here. Apparently, this revolting practice has an actual name: premastication or pre-chewing. According to CBS News via Wikipedia, “Pre-chewing food lubricates it for better infant digestion, and also passes on disease-fighting immunities in the mother’s saliva. However, pre-chewing food also puts baby at risk for any diseases the mother might have, as well.” Upon viewing the actress’ feeding technique many mommy … Continue reading
