Banning Chocolate Milk Doesn’t Improve Nutrition

Parents who had children in several schools in Oregon noticed what they viewed as a problem. The kids were much more likely to drink chocolate milk than they were to drink white milk. The parents believed that banning the chocolate milk would force the kids to start drinking more white milk. Instead, things did not work out as planned. It is safe to say that the parents in the school district’s PTA meant well. They were hoping to make changes that would provide better nutrition for the students. They believed that removing the chocolate milk, and only offering white milk, … Continue reading

Frugal Food: Make Your Own Chewy Granola Bars

My kids are crazy for those chewy granola bars. They love to take them with their school lunches or to the park when they might need a snack. They are very convenient to have. Unfortunately, the price of chewy granola bars has been rising, all while the amount you get in a package has been shrinking. Combine that cost with the unsavory ingredients in some of them (“natural” versions are even more expensive), it only makes sense to create my own homemade version. I experimented with a number of recipes but wound up settling on one that uses honey as … Continue reading

Protect Your Allergic Child from Valentine’s Day

Does your child attend an elementary school that will be having a classroom Valentine’s Day party? Typically, those parties involve a ton of sweets, treats, and goodies that do not have ingredient labels and may contain things your child is allergic to. What’s a parent to do? Here are some options to protect your child from Valentine’s Day. Parents want to protect their child from all potential harm. Food allergies make that difficult. Not everyone understands what your child could experience if he or she encounters peanuts, gluten, eggs, or milk. Your child might not entirely understand exactly how this … Continue reading

No Bake Angle Food Dessert

When my oven broke and I was too broke to get it repaired, I had to come up with ways to bake and cook without it.  I was going to an event and needed to bring a dessert.  I hated to buy something store bought since I normally bake.  Although, I can’t say I was crying over not having the ability to bake.  Life has been too busy to breath lately much less bake.  I was lucky enough to come across this recipe in my box of dessert recipes.  I am not a fan of crushed pineapples but so many … Continue reading

Eliminating Food Waste: Leftovers for Lunch

Winter is a great time for converting your leftovers for lunch. While a cold sandwich or a salad might be fine for the summer, winter’s temperatures often bring appreciation for a warm and heartier meal. Plus, when you have leftovers for lunch, you are eliminating food waste. Eliminating food waste means eliminating the cost of additional food, as well. Many people turn their noses up at leftovers. It is okay. I used to be one of them. One way to solve this is to freeze any leftovers you have and then bring them back out on another day. Of course … Continue reading

Small Meals Are Best

I don’t really need another study to tell me that eating frequent small meals is best…but here’s another one anyhow. A several French researchers, including Xavier Allirot, knew that if you ate smaller meals frequently throughout the day, rather than the traditional breakfast, lunch, and dinner, it was easier to keep weight off.  But, there were no studies to prove it.  Allirot said, “There is no scientific consensus as to the optimum number of meals we should have for weight management and speculations regarding this are often contradictory.” So, he and his colleagues set out to do their own.  The … Continue reading

Eliminate Food Waste: Chocolate Waffles and Pancake Mix

I’m making it a goal to check my fridge and pantry at the end of each week for ingredients that need to be used soon. This way, I can eliminate the food waste. Sometimes even this effort isn’t enough. For example, I pulled out some chicken that had a sell by date of a few days into the future, however, it had already gone bad. I won’t be shopping for chicken in that store again. I bought it at the beginning of the week. Today’s hunt through the pantry yielded a carton of buttermilk and some organic cocoa powder, so … Continue reading

Foods Allowed and Not Allowed on the Paleo Diet

What is the Paleo Diet? The Paleo Diet is also known as the caveman diet or the Paleolithic diet. The diet is rooted in the idea that humans ate in a healthier manner during ancient times. Think of the hunter-gathers and what they ate. Basically that is what is allowed on the Paleo diet. A diet rich in raw vegetation, fruit, nuts, and meat are on the menu for this Stone Age method of eating. The diet is high in fat with moderate amount of animal protein. Carbohydrates are kept to a minimum. From my understanding calorie counting is not … Continue reading
